Arizona Sheriff's Helicopter Rescues Elderly Couple from Flooded Vehicle
Authorities urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways after monsoon storms caused significant rainfall in the region.
A helicopter from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) was deployed Wednesday to rescue two individuals in their 80s who were stranded in a flooded car. The incident occurred along State Route 238, approximately 20 miles west of Maricopa, Arizona, amid heavy monsoon rains.
MCSO shared dramatic video and photos of the rescue operation, emphasizing the dangers of driving through flooded areas. "Reminder, crossing flooded roadways can have dangerous and many times deadly outcomes," the Sheriff’s Office stated on Facebook, urging the public to stay informed about weather alerts and avoid flooded zones.
The Goodyear Fire Department also advised drivers to steer clear of State Route 238 due to the high water. Images released by the Sheriff's Office and the Goodyear Fire Department showed rescuers reaching the vehicle and bringing the occupants to safety.
"Flooding can change road conditions quickly. Avoid SR 238, and if you come across water covering any roadway, don’t risk it," the fire department said in a statement. "Don’t try to drive through. Turn around and find another way."
The rescue took place as heavy rains impacted communities across the Southwest United States. MCSO noted that while their pilots and crew are experienced, such rescues remain inherently dangerous and difficult due to rapidly changing conditions.
