Juan Manuel Reverter, 38, a citizen of Argentina, has been arrested in central Oregon in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Agostina Jalabert, 31, in Mexico.

Authorities apprehended Reverter on Thursday, July 25, 2026, through a joint operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and Interpol. He had been residing in Oregon after entering the U.S. on a six-month visa in August 2024, which he overstayed.

"In violation of our nation’s laws, he overstayed his visa. He will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings," a Homeland Security spokesperson stated. An Interpol red notice had been active for Reverter’s capture since December of the previous year, with authorities previously suggesting he may have fled to the United States, Belize, Guatemala, or Argentina.

Jalabert was found deceased in her Playa del Carmen apartment on February 18, 2023. Mexican prosecutors allege that Reverter murdered her and staged the scene to appear as a suicide, with Jalabert found hanging from a towel rack. According to her mother, Jalabert suffered "torture, burns, abuse [and] beatings to the head."

Jalabert's sisters, Candela and Camila, expressed relief at the arrest. Candela, who was 21 at the time, discovered her sister's body. The family reported that Jalabert had sent a concerning text message to her mother shortly before her death, stating, "Mom, I feel ugly, I feel like I deserve men who hurt me."

Mexican authorities initially classified Jalabert's death as a suicide before reclassifying it as femicide. The arrest of Reverter in Oregon marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for Jalabert, who was described by her sister as her "soulmate."
