Anthony Michael Hall, a prominent figure in Hollywood for over five decades, has shared the key ingredients to his sustained career: maintaining a thick skin, persistence, and a genuine passion for his work.
Hall, currently appearing on the FOX celebrity competition series "Nation's Dumbest," hosted by Jack Whitehall, reflected on his more than 50 years in the industry. He emphasized the importance of being "game" and seeking to collaborate with talented individuals. "You have to have a thick skin," Hall stated, noting that he was "born with a hard head," which has served him well in the notoriously tough business. He believes that a deep love for what one does is crucial for enduring success.
The actor also highlighted the lesson of staying humble and focused, advising to "keep your eyes on the road, and just keep moving ahead somehow." He acknowledged the inherent uncertainty of the entertainment industry but expressed gratitude for his career. "There’s no guarantee of anything in this business, and it’s a tough business, but it’s really great business, so I’m very fortunate," he said.
Hall's participation in "Nation's Dumbest" represents a new opportunity that he did not anticipate. The series, which premiered July 15 on FOX and streams the following day on Hulu, features 12 celebrities competing in a comedic twist on a game show format. Hosted by Whitehall, the show challenges contestants to return to a "summer school" setting for trivia, physical games, and school-themed challenges. Unlike typical competitions, the goal is not to win but to be eliminated, with the highest-performing contestant "graduating" each week. The last celebrity remaining earns the title of "The Nation’s Dumbest."
Hall observed parallels between his experience on the iconic 1985 film "The Breakfast Club" and being back in a classroom environment for "Nation's Dumbest." He recalled how the cast of "The Breakfast Club" were "thrown together" and "stuck," yet they "all really got along." He described this as a "real nice organic surprise" and a positive experience. Hall compared this to the unpredictable nature of finding work in the industry, stating, "coming into a year where I wasn’t sure where the next job was gonna come, like we often feel in this industry. And I got the call, and I was just really excited by it."
He embraced the opportunity, traveling to Toronto to film the show, and found the experience enjoyable. "Everybody was really cool. So we had a really good time," Hall concluded.
The inaugural cast of "Nation's Dumbest" includes Ice-T, Jon Heder, Hilaria Baldwin, Carmen Electra, Chase Hudson, Elle King, Matt Leinart, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Steve-O, JoJo Siwa, and Andrew Yang, alongside Hall. The show's format, which has seen international success, combines pop quizzes, report cards, and "final exams" with Whitehall's comedic hosting style. FOX has positioned the series as a novel take on celebrity competition television, aiming to generate humor by inverting the traditional objective of winning.
