Conservative commentator Ann Coulter criticized Republican Darlene Graham after her significant election loss on Tuesday, sarcastically commenting on the conclusion of her political tenure.
"Hard to believe the Darlene Graham era is coming to an end. The Lioness of the Senate!" Coulter posted on X.
Graham's loss to Democrat Annie Andrews in South Carolina represents a setback for Donald Trump, who had endorsed Graham for the Senate seat vacated after Lindsey Graham's death in July. Andrews secured 51 percent of the vote compared to Graham's 47 percent, with 86 percent of precincts reporting.
Despite Trump's campaigning, Graham's candidacy was reportedly hampered by questions about her qualifications. Graham, who had no prior public office experience, made several campaign missteps, including admitting a lack of expertise in foreign policy and expressing uncertainty about her desire to serve as a senator. During a Republican primary debate, she stated, "National security is not my thing." Andrews utilized this statement to question Graham's readiness for a full Senate term, likening it to a surgeon admitting a lack of skill before an operation.
Graham, however, also engaged in sharp rhetoric, calling Andrews "plain batst crazy" and a "gun grabber" while asserting her own conservative stance. She drew cheers for her comment that liberals could "kiss my a."
The candidates also debated Graham's use of her maiden name, Graham, instead of her married name, Nordone, during the campaign. Andrews suggested this was a recent change, but Graham asserted her legal name had always been Graham, a connection to her late parents.
Following a night where Republicans reportedly lost control of both the House and Senate, Trump suggested that he would have secured a landslide victory if he had been on the ballot, appearing to attribute the losses to the candidates themselves. This comes after his considerable efforts to support Graham's campaign.
