Prime Minister-designate Andy Burnham is expected to face immediate and significant international challenges upon taking office, with concerns that Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, may test his leadership early on.

Downing Street officials have indicated that Burnham's premiership could be marked by provocations from Putin, aiming to assert Russian influence in the initial stages of Burnham's leadership. John Bew, a former chief foreign adviser to No. 10, has cautioned that Burnham will need to be prepared to address global affairs from the outset.

In addition to potential Russian assertiveness, Burnham might also need to navigate escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, and the possible resurgence of conflict in the Middle East.
