Seven-division boxing champion Amanda Serrano is targeting a knockout victory in her upcoming bout, aiming to match and potentially surpass a women's boxing record for stoppages. Serrano, who has equaled the 32 stoppage record previously held by Elizabeth Parker, believes the return to two-minute rounds for the 12-round fight will facilitate a decisive finish.
"We all want a knockout," Serrano told BBC Sport. "With the two minutes, I get to give it my all. It's so much higher pace than three minutes. I can just give everything."
Beyond this fight, Serrano has outlined plans for a final bout in her native Puerto Rico, targeted for late 2024 or early 2027. "Seventeen years, I've accomplished what I wanted. Now it's time to enjoy the sport from the other side, watching them," she stated.
While acknowledging potential challenges from fighters like Ellie Scotney, who has moved up to featherweight and expressed interest in facing Serrano, the champion is focused on her exit strategy. She has already begun mentoring emerging talents under MVP, managing fighters such as Krista Rosado and Alexis Chaparro. "I love Ellie as a person, and as a fighter she's great, but right now I'm concentrating on this fight," Serrano said.
Serrano also noted the approaching retirement of long-time rival Katie Taylor, who is preparing for her own farewell match against Flora Pili on September 5. "Already fought my dream opponent three times," Serrano remarked. "Retiring so close together, we might share the Hall of Fame together. I wouldn't be prouder than to share that moment with Katie Taylor. She's a great champion and a great human being."
