New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso stated that "timings" were the primary reason he accepted the managerial position at Stamford Bridge over a potential move to Liverpool.
Alonso is the sixth permanent manager appointed by Chelsea's American owners, BlueCo, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, in the past four years. His predecessors, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, held the title of head coach. Alonso's appointment comes with the title of manager, which sources indicate is a significant distinction, though he will collaborate with a five-person sporting director team on player recruitment.
"What I like is that we work together and we are all part of the decisions we take, we all feel responsible for that," Alonso said when asked about the importance of his title. "The ultimate goal is clear and, for me, it is the way it should be."
He expressed confidence in the club's direction, noting the potential within the existing squad and the need for strategic reinforcement. "We need to reinforce it in the right way and take good decisions to do that. The feeling is that we are aligned with the sporting directors. The ultimate goal is to have a good team, build the right squad and we are in that moment."
Chelsea concluded the Premier League season in 10th place, missing out on European qualification after a final-day defeat. This outcome has implications for the club's squad management. Key players, including Cole Palmer, did not receive international call-ups for the World Cup following the disappointing end to the campaign.
Alonso has had more time with the majority of his squad during pre-season training. He specifically noted Cole Palmer's positive attitude upon returning. "So far we have been together for a few days and he has come in with a positive mindset and positive spirit. He wants to enjoy playing football," Alonso remarked. "He is a special player, a different class with a different quality, and if we help him by building a team around him that allows his talent to shine, we will be closer to success. I am sure of that."
