Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has recently renewed her membership with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a move that follows a seven-year lapse in her dues. The congresswoman's renewed affiliation comes as the DSA has seen a surge in its national profile following several Democratic primary victories.
According to a statement shared by DSA with City & State New York, Ocasio-Cortez rejoined the organization in August 2026. Her previous membership, initially acquired in 2018, had lapsed in 2019. DSA leadership reportedly noticed the lapse after Ocasio-Cortez referred to herself as a member of the DSA's New York City chapter but not the national organization, prompting a review of her membership status.
Historically, DSA memberships required manual annual renewal. The organization has since transitioned to an automatic renewal system.
The renewed membership has sparked commentary from various observers. Some have noted the timing of her rejoining, particularly as Ocasio-Cortez is frequently discussed as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential election. Online discussions and social media posts have questioned the timing, with some users calling it "very, very, very convenient."
Others have offered more lighthearted takes on the situation. Columnist Megan McArdle humorously compared the situation to personal experiences with lapsed memberships. Author Byrne Hobart and economist Wojtek Kopczuk also contributed to the online discourse with humorous remarks.
Earlier this month, The Washington Post reported that the DSA was internally divided on whether and how to make a 2028 presidential endorsement, with Ocasio-Cortez at the center of that debate. Ocasio-Cortez's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
