Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has not dismissed the possibility of a 2028 presidential campaign, following a recent poll indicating that Democratic voters view her as their leading choice for the next nominee.
When asked by Fox News Digital about her interest in becoming the Democratic nominee in 2028, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "I have genuinely not really weighed seriously anything past the midterm elections." She added, "I think that I'm taking in this information just like anybody else."
A University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll released Wednesday revealed Ocasio-Cortez as the frontrunner among potential Democratic presidential candidates for 2028. Although New Hampshire no longer holds the first official Democratic presidential primary, the state is closely watched for early indicators of voter sentiment.
Ocasio-Cortez was asked about her reaction to the poll, which showed strong interest in her leading the party in the next election cycle. She responded, "You're gonna have to ask a voter about that. I have less insight into it than they do."
The poll projected her support at 22% among likely Democratic voters, a seven-point increase since February. This places her one point ahead of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and 17 points ahead of former Vice President Kamala Harris. Both Harris and Gov. Gavin Newsom, also potential 2028 candidates, saw a decrease in support in the latest survey.
Ocasio-Cortez has previously expressed interest in a potential Senate bid to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in his next re-election bid. She has also endorsed several progressive candidates who have won primary elections against mainstream Democrats.
Ocasio-Cortez has received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America in past elections, and she is widely expected to seek their endorsement again for 2028. However, internal discussions within the organization regarding an earlier presidential endorsement are ongoing, as their selections are typically made at the biennial national convention in the summer of 2027.
