A 700-acre wine country estate in Paso Robles, California, that was owned by "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek for 37 years is set to be auctioned off on August 5, with no reserve price.

Trebek, along with other investors, sold the property, known as Windfall Farms, to its current owners for $1.6 million in 2001. The current owners have since transformed the estate from a working winery into a sprawling family retreat, reportedly listing it for $33 million in recent attempts to sell.

The property is being offered by Concierge Auctions. Because it is being sold with no reserve, the estate will go to the highest bidder unless it is sold before the auction.

Investment and Retreat

Located on California's Central Coast, Windfall Farms offers more than just celebrity provenance. The listing describes it as a "world-class Central Coast development opportunity with positive cash flow," positioning it as both an investment and a private retreat.

Trebek, who died in 2020, was part of a group of investors that reportedly helped save the ranch from bankruptcy during his ownership. He was known for investing in agricultural properties in California wine country.

The ranch currently operates as a cash-flow-positive premium wine grape vineyard business, featuring dozens of acres planted with sought-after varietals. Mature olive groves complement the vineyards, blending luxury living with agricultural enterprise.

Equestrian Facilities and Location

Windfall Farms also boasts impressive equestrian amenities, including "stunning Kentucky-style equine facilities," expansive horse barns, training areas, and a 6.5-furlong racetrack, reflecting the property's origins as a thoroughbred breeding operation.

Unlike typical celebrity homes, the estate provides hundreds of acres of rolling hills, open pasture, and productive farmland, offering privacy and opportunities for outdoor recreation. This combination appeals to buyers seeking both a luxury lifestyle and long-term investment potential.

Paso Robles has emerged as a rapidly growing wine destination, attracting boutique wineries and upscale resorts, with an international reputation for producing Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines.

Auction Trends

The auction reflects a broader trend in the luxury housing market, where sellers of distinctive properties are using competitive bidding to reach a global buyer pool. Bidding is scheduled to begin on August 5 and conclude on August 15, coinciding with RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week, exposing the estate to international luxury collectors and investors.

This is not the only former Trebek property to recently come to market. Earlier this year, another 577-acre estate in nearby Creston, also once co-owned by Trebek, was listed. That property includes producing vineyards, multiple residences, livestock facilities, and event spaces, further highlighting Trebek's appreciation for California's agricultural landscapes.
