ABC News is introducing changes to its weekend "Good Morning America" lineup, appointing Rachel Scott and Rhiannon Ally as co-anchors, and naming Leslie Lopez as the weekend meteorologist. These changes are set to take effect starting September 12.
Scott, who currently serves as ABC News’ senior political correspondent, will co-anchor the Saturday edition of "GMA" alongside Whit Johnson. Johnson, a longtime weekend anchor since 2018, will continue his role as anchor for "World News Tonight" on Saturdays. Scott will maintain her position covering the White House and Capitol Hill, reporting from Washington while co-anchoring from New York.
On Sundays, Ally will join Gio Benitez, who has been a weekend anchor since 2023. Ally joined ABC News in 2021 and has previously co-anchored "World News Now" and "Good Morning America First Look."
The network also announced a new format for the weekend broadcasts, which aims to provide the anchors with more opportunities to appear on weekday programs. "We know weekend mornings are precious to our audience, and we could not be more excited to have Whit, Rachel, Gio and Rhiannon as our new weekend team, along with Leslie, to help our viewers make the most of their Saturdays and Sundays," said "GMA" senior executive producer Simone Swink. "Plus our new format will allow this team to show up more on our weekday broadcasts, too."
Lopez, the newly appointed weekend meteorologist, joined ABC News in April after a decade at KABC-TV in Los Angeles. She previously worked as the morning meteorologist for the station's weekday newscasts.
The weekend anchors, including Johnson, Scott, Benitez, and Ally, will also rotate as anchors for "ABC News Live Weekend," a program broadcast on ABC News' streaming channel at 10 a.m. ET on weekend mornings. The weekend edition of "Good Morning America" airs Saturdays and Sundays at 8 a.m. ET on ABC.
Scott's previous reporting for ABC News includes coverage of the January 6 Capitol attack, reporting from Butler, Pennsylvania, following the 2024 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, and anchoring live coverage of then-President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Ally's assignments have included breaking news coverage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and reporting on the deaths of Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Francis.
