The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly considering a move to acquire Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., according to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler. The potential acquisition comes as Porter Jr. and the Steelers have reached what is described as a "tipping point" in their ongoing contract dispute.
Porter Jr., a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been engaged in a contract standoff with the Steelers for the past year. This situation has led to speculation that he could be traded.
Fowler identified the 49ers as a potential landing spot due to their significant assets. The team possesses eight picks in the upcoming NFL Draft and an estimated $45 million in salary cap space. This financial flexibility could allow San Francisco to extend Porter Jr.'s contract following a trade.
Acquiring Porter Jr. could also address the 49ers' secondary needs. The team finished outside the bottom five in passing touchdowns allowed last season with 29. The potential addition of Porter Jr. alongside current cornerback Deommodore Lenoir could form a strong cornerback duo for San Francisco.
Porter Jr. has established himself as an effective press-man coverage cornerback, often being among the league's least-targeted players at his position. Last season, opposing receivers caught 32 of the 66 passes thrown his way. In the 49ers' current secondary, Renardo Green, playing opposite Lenoir, finished his rookie year with a 48.5% completion percentage against him.
