San Francisco 49ers owner and CEO Jed York was arrested on August 23 in East Palestine, Ohio, on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. The 46-year-old businessman was reportedly confronted by officers from the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force in a trailer park after allegedly attempting to pay a woman $140 for sexual activity.
York was released after posting a $5,000 bond. Court documents indicate he responded to an undercover advertisement on a known prostitution website. Upon arrival at the arranged location, he was met by a law enforcement sting operation.
The operation was led by Detective Daniel Haueter of the East Palestine Police Department, who is also part of the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. Haueter's career spans three decades, and his efforts in combating internet sex crimes have reportedly gained national recognition. An Ohio Attorney General newsletter from 2024 highlighted Haueter's success in apprehending individuals, describing his approach as setting traps that lure out "especially repugnant creatures." The newsletter detailed tactics involving ads that appear to be posted by a mother offering her and her underage daughter for sex, leading to the arrest of men who respond.
York was taken into custody with his cellular device, which was used to arrange the purported criminal act. He was initially charged with engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors later amended the charge to disorderly conduct. He also faced a charge of possessing criminal tools. York pleaded no contest and was sentenced to one day in jail, credited as served, and fined $1,150. His cellphone was returned, and $160 seized was given to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of the plea agreement. He also completed an online course.
York, who is worth an estimated $500 million, also co-owns the Premier League club Leeds United and Scottish club Rangers. He was born approximately 20 miles from East Palestine in Youngstown, Ohio.
This incident follows York's filing for divorce in May from his wife, Danielle, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, married since 2011, have two sons and have agreed to joint legal and physical custody. A court date for their divorce case is pending.
The NFL has stated it is aware of the matter and it will be reviewed under the league's personal conduct policy. The San Francisco 49ers organization issued a statement saying that as the matter has been legally resolved, they will not provide further comment.
