The New York Yankees closed out the Subway Series with a 2-0 victory over the Mets on Sunday, propelled by an early solo home run from Ben Rice and a stellar outing from pitcher Cam Schlittler.
Rice ignited the Yankees' offense in the first inning, hitting a home run that provided the game's only run. It was Rice's 38th home run of the season.
Schlittler was the standout on the mound for the Yankees, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. He struck out batters and kept the Mets' offense in check throughout his appearance. His performance contributed to an ERA of 1.95, a mark that would rank among the best for qualified Yankees pitchers since 1913.
"Special weekend for the city," Schlittler commented after the game. "As much as the fans don’t like each other, I feel like they came together for this weekend and enjoyed something special. … It was a little frustrating [Saturday] just hearing all the Mets chants. I wanted to make sure I could come in here today and kind of shut that down."
Despite the Yankees' victory, Juan Soto struggled at the plate, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He faced boos from the crowd after his final strikeout in the ninth inning.
The win marked the conclusion of the weekend series between the Bronx and Queens rivals.
