New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. is considered day-to-day after an MRI on his right knee revealed inflammation but no structural damage, the team announced Sunday. Lombard exited Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox after an awkward check swing caused him to grab at his knee.
Manager Aaron Boone described Lombard as "day to day" and expressed hope for his swift return. Lombard himself indicated that an injured list stint was not currently anticipated, though the full extent of the injury remains to be determined. "As of now, no, but we still don't really know yet," Lombard said.
The 21-year-old infielder experienced discomfort during his first at-bat in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The knee tightened, leading to his exit before the fourth inning. "Felt something a little off," Lombard stated. "It was kind of one of those weird, freak things where it was kind of a check swing, and then also [trying] to get out of the way of the pitch."

José Caballero resumed shortstop duties in Lombard's absence. Anthony Volpe remains at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he recently debuted at third base to broaden his defensive profile, according to Boone. The Yankees' infield alignment for Sunday's series finale against the Red Sox saw Caballero at shortstop, with Amed Rosario at third base and Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second.
