New York Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón has been placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation, the team announced Friday. The announcement added another injury concern for the Yankees on a day that was otherwise expected to bring injury relief.
Rodón's elbow previously underwent a procedure this offseason to remove loose bodies and address a bone spur. The immediate severity of his current elbow issue was not immediately clear.
The left-hander has made nine starts this season, holding a 3.30 earned run average. He had been scheduled to pitch on Saturday. With Rodón sidelined, the Yankees have several options for his next start. They could shift their rotation to have starters pitch on regular rest, promoting Ryan Weathers to start Saturday instead of Sunday. Alternatively, the team could call up a starter from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or turn to pitchers like Ryan Yarbrough or Paul Blackburn. Brendan Beck, who pitched on Saturday, could also be on turn if called upon. Elmer Rodriguez pitched on Thursday.
The Yankees officially activated outfielder Trent Grisham and infielder Ryan McMahon from the injured list on Friday. To make room on the roster for Grisham and McMahon, Oswaldo Cabrera was optioned.
Despite this setback, other key members of the Yankees' pitching staff, including Gerrit Cole, Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers, and Will Warren, remain healthy.
