The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured a 16-0 victory against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, an achievement notable for the team not completing a single pass. This marks the first time in approximately 50 years that an NFL team has won a game without a successful pass attempt. The win was powered by a franchise-record 324 rushing yards.
Under difficult, rain-drenched conditions at Raymond James Stadium, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted three passes but failed to complete any. Head coach Todd Bowles attributed the offensive strategy to the weather. "The conditions told him that," Bowles stated when asked about the lack of passing. "You could see it as a downpour down there and the wind's blowing. You can kind of see the ball wasn't going anywhere."
This offensive approach harkened back to a more run-centric era of football. The Buccaneers' ground game was spearheaded by Bucky Irving, who gained 170 yards on 27 carries for an average of 6.3 yards per attempt, and Kenneth Gainwell, who added 140 rushing yards on 25 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt. Despite the historic nature of the game, Irving indicated a focus on performance over the conditions. "Rain, snow, muddy, you're going to have to play in it anyway," he said.
The last occurrence of an NFL team winning without a completed pass was on September 29, 1974, when the Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets. In that game, Bills quarterback Joe Ferguson attempted only two passes without a completion, while O.J. Simpson rushed for 117 yards.
In contrast to the Buccaneers' ground success, the Falcons struggled offensively. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed eight of his 24 attempts for four interceptions. The Buccaneers' defensive effort contributed to the shutout victory, while their offense, despite the lack of passing success, managed enough offense to score 16 points.
