New York Yankees leadership convened in Tampa, Florida, for meetings starting Thursday to discuss potential acquisitions ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline. While the team is exploring several high-profile players, significant impediments exist for most targets, and no deals are guaranteed.
Among the top trade candidates being considered is Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal. MLB's current top pitcher, Skubal could bolster any team's rotation. A trade involving him appears likely, though the Yankees' rotation is already considered their greatest strength. As of Thursday evening, the Yankees had not yet learned the asking price for Skubal. A potential match with Detroit could involve the Yankees offering young pitchers like Will Warren and prospects such as Dax Kilby, Elmer Rodríguez, and Carlos Lagrange, although it is assumed George Lombard Jr. would not be included for a rental player. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, known for his shrewd trading, historically has been reluctant to part with a large quantity of prospects, with reliever Mark Melancon being perhaps the most significant prospect he surrendered at a deadline.
The Yankees are also interested in acquiring frontline starters like Clay Holmes and Reid Detmers. Acquiring Holmes could allow the Yankees to shift Warren or Ryan Weathers to the bullpen. Detmers is considered a significant talent. The San Francisco Giants have informed other clubs that pitcher Logan Webb is not available for trade.
