The New York Yankees have acquired infielder Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals in a trade that sends four players to Washington, according to reports. The move comes as the Yankees attempt to strengthen their lineup ahead of Major League Baseball's trade deadline, which is set for Monday at 6 p.m. EST.
Garcia, who is hitting .283 with 23 home runs this season, represents a significant addition for a Yankees team dealing with injuries to key sluggers like Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton. His home run total surpasses most of the current Yankees hitters, with the exception of Ben Rice.
Over his seven MLB seasons, Garcia holds a career batting average of .268 with a .302 on-base percentage and a .431 slugging percentage. In the current season, however, he led the National League with a .560 slugging percentage. The Nationals will receive Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grable, and Jack Ceber in the deal. None of these players are considered high-level prospects.
Questions remain regarding Garcia's primary position, as he has spent most of the 2026 season at first base, though he previously played second base earlier in his career. The Yankees currently have Jazz Chisholm at second base, and Rice and Paul Goldschmidt have been sharing time at first base. While Chisholm has experience at third base, it is not the Yankees' preferred alignment.
New York's acquisition of Garcia occurs as the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly acquiring pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees, who currently hold a 6.5-game lead in the American League Wild Card standings and trail Tampa Bay by 2.5 games in the AL East, are looking to enhance their chances of competing with the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers in a potential postseason run.
