Spanish soccer legend Xavi has outlined key strategies for the Spanish national team as they prepare to face Argentina in the World Cup final. He emphasized the importance of unity and emotional control for Luis de la Fuente's squad.
Spain, the reigning European champions, are on the brink of winning their first World Cup since 2010. Their dominant semifinal victory over France secured their spot in Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium. Standing between them and the coveted trophy is Lionel Messi's Argentina, aiming to become the first team to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962. Argentina reached the final after a dramatic 2-1 comeback win against England.
The final is anticipated to be a closely contested match, with Spain entering as slight favorites, having conceded only one goal throughout the tournament. Xavi, a pivotal member of Spain's 2010 World Cup-winning team, shared his advice during a FIFA Legends event in New York City.
"I think they [need to] do the same that they are doing in all the tournament, being a team," Xavi stated. He highlighted the strong individual performances within the squad, mentioning players like Pau Cubarsi, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Unai Simon. He also praised the team's full-backs, including Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella, asserting that Spain possesses all the necessary components to succeed.
Regarding their approach to the final, Xavi advised, "Just to be calm. Control the tempo, control the emotions, it's a final... and be a team. They are doing so well and we are so proud in Spain."
Under De la Fuente, Spain has re-established itself as a top global soccer force, claiming the 2024 European Championship and overcoming pre-tournament favorites France en route to the World Cup final. Despite facing Messi, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time and Xavi's former Barcelona teammate, Spain is confident. The team also boasts its own rising star in teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who many see as a potential successor to Messi's legacy.
"When they won the [European Championship] two years ago, they realized that they can compete against everybody," Xavi said, referring to Spain's recent success. "So now they are ready. They have the experience, they know the way to compete well in a big tournament, so they have everything to win this final."
Xavi concluded that while Spain possesses the capability to win, they face an experienced Argentine side that knows what it takes to succeed in major tournaments.
