WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced Friday that she will retire at the end of the calendar year, concluding a 7.5-year tenure that has coincided with a period of significant growth for the league.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who is Engelbert's superior, will have the final decision in selecting her replacement. The IX Sports reported that Engelbert has been preparing the league for this transition for the past three years and has already submitted a list of potential internal and external candidates to WNBA owners.
Engelbert's departure comes as the WNBA continues to gain momentum, with record attendance and viewership in recent seasons. The incoming commissioner will face the task of building on this success and navigating future challenges for the league.
