WNBA coach Sandy Brondello has apologized for an "protected species" comment she made about Atlanta Dream player Angel Reese. The incident occurred Friday night during the Dream's 111-92 victory over the Toronto Tempo.

Brondello was overheard making the remark after disagreeing with a foul call involving Reese in the final minutes of the game. Reese had been awarded a foul while attempting a layup, despite making contact with Tempo player Nyara Sabally, who was on the floor in pain.

"Angel, she's a protected species," Brondello was heard saying. The comment quickly gained traction on social media, with Reese herself responding to criticism directed at Brondello. "ARE WE SURPRIZED?!" Reese posted on X.

In a statement released on social media, Brondello apologized to Reese, acknowledging the impact of her words. "Last night, in the emotion of the moment after [Nyara Sabally's] injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn't have used, and I take full responsibility for that," Brondello wrote. "My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you."

Brondello further stated, "I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I'm deeply sorry for that. I've spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible Black women. I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply."

Reese had not directly responded to Brondello's apology at the time of reporting but reshared a post on X that stated, "So many young girls can learn from how @Reese10Angel stands up for herself."

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley commended Brondello's statement, calling it "A real apology" on X.

The league has recently faced scrutiny over player conduct and comments. Earlier in the month, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas reported receiving death threats and racial slurs after an incident involving Caitlin Clark. Clark has since spoken out against online harassment and hate directed at players, teammates, and coaches.
