William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett died after collapsing on the field during a game on Saturday, and the school's interim president has stated that Barnett had no known underlying health conditions. Barnett, 20, collapsed on the sideline shortly after scoring a touchdown in the Division II team's season opener against Fort Lewis College.

Interim President Drew Van Horn told ESPN that all athletes at the college undergo physical examinations and that he was unaware of any health issues Barnett may have had. A team doctor and on-site emergency medical personnel immediately attended to Barnett and attempted resuscitation following his collapse. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Liberty, Mo., police captain, Nathan Mulch, informed ESPN that the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Van Horn indicated that the school would review the circumstances further after the autopsy results are available.

Barnett, a junior, was entering his third season with the William Jewell football team. He had his 2025 season cut short due to injury but finished the prior year with 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns. In his two seasons with the team, he appeared in 13 games and scored a total of six touchdowns.

Barnett was a standout player at Liberty North High School in his hometown of Liberty, where he helped lead the team to a state title his senior year, accumulating 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday in Kansas City, Kan., which would have been Barnett's 21st birthday. Barnett's family has requested privacy during this time.
