Will Ferrell's appearance during the MLB Home Run Derby on Netflix was met with significant backlash from fans who described the cameo as "painful" and "not funny at all." The integration, intended to promote Ferrell's upcoming Netflix comedy series "The Hawk," drew criticism for its awkward execution and audio mixing issues.
As the Home Run Derby entered its first year of a three-year deal with Netflix, the streaming service sought to integrate promotional content. The event, held in Philadelphia, which was also the setting for the classic film "Rocky," featured introductions by boxing announcer Michael Buffer. Players walked out to a home-plate-shaped boxing ring as Buffer announced their names.
Ferrell, appearing in character as Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, was joined by co-stars Luke Wilson and Jimmy Tatro to provide commentary on the players' introductions. However, their presence and remarks were frequently muddled by poor audio mixing, making it difficult for viewers to hear either the athletes or the commentators. The jokes from the trio also often clashed with Buffer's introductions, leading to a disjointed viewing experience.
Social media platforms saw an outpouring of negative reactions. Users on X expressed disappointment, with one writing, "Maybe I'm way off, but I don't think the Will Ferrell-Luke Wilson thing is working at all. (Honestly, I get the sense that they also know it isn't working.)" Another commented, "Love Will Ferrell, but we don't need him here and can't hear him on the broadcast. Cross promotion has its limits."
Commentators also weighed in. Andrew Marchand of The Athletic noted, "Will Ferrell and company may want to say something funny." Other viewers shared their frustration, with one stating, "I can't believe Netflix ruined the Home Run Derby and Will Ferrell in the first 10 minutes." Another expressed, "This was a difficult watch. Just bad. I like these guys, but this was an awkward fit. I just don't know if all this extra stuff is needed. Idk. Maybe I'm just lame."
