Running back Wayne Knight has been an early standout in UCLA's football training camp, impressing new head coach Bob Chesney with his explosive play and versatility. Knight, who followed Chesney from James Madison, has quickly recaptured top form after being limited in spring practices due to an undisclosed injury.

Chesney described Knight as "unbelievable" and "hard to put a pad on," highlighting his ability to get low, see plays clearly, and be a threat both as a runner and in the passing game. Knight is competing to become the team's top ballcarrier against returners Jaivian Thomas and Anthony Woods. The running backs unit is expected to benefit from an improved offensive line that has shown strength in picking up blitzes and opening holes for the interior run game.

Prior to the team's move to Orange County for practice sessions, Knight demonstrated the patience and burst that earned him second-team All-American honors in 2025. During that season at James Madison, he accumulated 2,039 all-purpose yards and helped his team reach the College Football Playoff.

Adding to the offensive support, former NFL quarterback Derek Carr has joined the coaching staff as a special advisor to Chesney. Carr, who lives nearby in Newport Beach, will provide input on the offense, advising players and staff, and will be present on the sidelines during games. His extensive experience in the NFL and at Fresno State is expected to offer valuable real-time perspective to the quarterbacks, particularly in high-pressure situations.

"It's this ability to communicate with a quarterback in real time in hostile environments is what he brings to it," Chesney said of Carr. "And then the pressure that you feel back there as a quarterback, I think, is pretty awesome to hear another guy's perspective that's done it a very long time at the highest level."

The team is also focusing on building camaraderie. After sessions in the Orange County heat, the Bruins had a beach day with a cookout and planned future bonding activities such as players discussing their "why" and participating in mentorship programs. Chesney aims to foster a strong team culture, describing it as an effort "to interweave this thing and make it a program and a family."

In terms of injuries, left tackle contender Jordan Davis was sidelined due to dehydration, an issue not considered long-term. Wide receiver Aidan Mizell and center Riley Robell are also dealing with minor injuries that are not expected to cause extended absences.
