The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has settled a dispute over match fees with its national team players, ending a conflict that had threatened to disrupt preparations for the upcoming Nations Championship. Key members of the squad engaged in talks with WRU officials to finalize monetary terms for the three matches scheduled for this summer.

The agreement comes ahead of Wales' match against Fiji, scheduled for Saturday at Cardiff City Stadium. Disgruntled players had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with match fees in the range of £6,000 to £9,000 per player, seeking an increase.

A joint statement from the WRU and the Welsh Rugby Players Association confirmed that negotiations regarding employment terms for the new competition have concluded to the satisfaction of all parties. The statement also indicated that training preparations for the Fiji match have remained unaffected and that all involved are anticipating a positive outcome on Saturday and a successful campaign.

This resolution averts a potential player strike, a scenario previously considered in 2023 before the Six Nations clash with England. Following the match against Fiji, Wales is scheduled to play away games against Argentina and South Africa.

Head coach Steve Tandy is expected to announce his team selection for the Fiji game on Thursday. While the press conference is anticipated, it is likely to be overshadowed by questions regarding the resolved match fee row.
