Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool, stated that no one fully understands the personal difficulties Cody Gakpo has experienced. Gakpo has demonstrated remarkable resilience and performance on the field for Liverpool, contributing significantly to the team's early season success.

Van Dijk commented on Gakpo's situation following Liverpool's first win of the season, where the forward provided two assists. He noted that Gakpo endured a challenging summer that included the loss of his unborn child and a nearly completed £80 million transfer to Manchester City, which ultimately did not materialize.

Despite these significant personal and professional setbacks, Gakpo has started the current season strongly. He has scored one goal and provided three assists in the opening games, including setting up two goals for teammate Alexander Isak in the match against Ipswich Town.

"I don't think anyone knows what he has been through, so it is not easy for the outside world," Van Dijk said. "But the reality is he is here with us, and he wants to be important for us. He showed it already over numerous games, including already the last two games before tonight and then today again."

Van Dijk expressed his satisfaction that Gakpo remained with the club, stating, "I'm glad he stayed and on to many more good games." He acknowledged Gakpo's importance to the team over the past seasons and anticipates more strong performances.

Regarding teammate Alexander Isak, Van Dijk also praised his recovery from a severe injury. He acknowledged the pressure associated with a high transfer fee but highlighted Isak's hard work and positive pre-season and start to the current season. "I think he is only going to get better," Van Dijk added.
