The United States men's national soccer team concluded the World Cup group stage with a 3-2 loss to Turkey on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium. The defeat came courtesy of a stoppage-time goal by Turkey's Kaan Ayhan, preventing the U.S. from finishing the group stage undefeated.
Auston Trusty opened the scoring for the U.S. in the third minute, achieving the second-fastest World Cup goal in the team's history. However, Turkey responded with two goals before halftime, marking the first time the American squad had trailed in the tournament. Sebastian Berhalter equalized for the U.S. in the 49th minute, setting the stage for the late drama.
Christian Pulisic made his return to the field in the 58th minute after a previous absence due to a calf injury. He played the remainder of the match. The U.S. had already secured the top spot in its group before this final match.
The team now advances to the Round of 32, where they will aim to continue their pursuit of the World Cup title.
