Following the United States Men's National Team's departure from the 2026 World Cup, U.S. Soccer has indicated a desire for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to remain in his position. The federation released a statement suggesting positive ongoing conversations about the team's future and expressing respect and gratitude for Pochettino and his staff.
"We had positive conversations with Mauricio before the World Cup about the future," the statement read. "We agreed we would continue those conversations following a chance to rest and reflect post World Cup. We have a great deal of respect and gratitude for Mauricio, his staff and everyone part of the program. We have shared excitement about our potential and also shared clarity about the amount of work at all levels still required to achieve our ambition."
Pochettino, who was appointed nearly two years ago, led the USMNT through the group stage of the World Cup, which included an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay and a 2-0 win against Australia. The team advanced out of the group stage before being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Belgium with a 4-1 loss.
Despite the Round of 16 exit, U.S. Soccer's statement implies a view that Pochettino's tenure has shown potential and that the team is building towards greater success. The federation acknowledged both the shared excitement about the team's capabilities and the understanding of the work still needed across all levels of the program.
After the loss to Belgium, Pochettino stated that he would take time to consider his future with the national team. "In the next few weeks, we can start to talk if the federation wants to talk," he said. "Right now it’s about resting a little bit, to think, to have conversations with the federation to see what the decision is. I’m so happy. We’ve built a very good relationship. Now is not a moment to talk about [my future]."
Pochettino's coaching career includes significant stints at Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. His tenure with the USMNT began with a Gold Cup Final loss to Mexico, but the team's performance in the World Cup group stage showed significant progress. The Round of 16 match against Belgium, however, saw the team revert to what was described as familiar struggles with coordination and defensive errors, leading to the decisive 4-1 defeat.
US Soccer's statement suggests that retaining Pochettino is a priority, viewing his tactical acumen and player development approach as valuable assets for the program. The federation also noted that while the team's exit was frustrating, the current U.S. player pool is considered the strongest it has ever been. The statement also implicitly points to structural issues at the youth level as areas requiring attention, separate from the head coach's direct responsibilities.
The organization faces a critical juncture in its development, with the next coaching cycle being pivotal. Pochettino indicated that he would engage in further discussions with the federation after a period of rest and reflection. The outcome of these conversations will significantly shape the future direction of the U.S. Men's National Team.
