A contentious umpire call significantly impacted the Miami Marlins' efforts Monday night, as a missed foul ball ruling in the seventh inning thwarted a potential rally against the Philadelphia Phillies, ultimately contributing to a 6-5 loss. The Marlins now trail the Phillies by four games in the wild-card race.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Marlins batter Javier Sanoja hit a line drive down the right-field line. The ball appeared to strike the foul line chalk, suggesting a potential bases-clearing double. However, first base umpire Shane Livensparger ruled the ball foul, a decision that drew immediate challenges from Marlins manager Clayton McCullough.

The challenge was successful, overturning the foul ball call. Despite the overturned call, only two of the three potential runs scored. McCullough was later ejected by third-base umpire Todd Tichenor while arguing the placement of runners and why a third run was not awarded.

Marlins players and management expressed frustration with the call. "It was awful," the team stated, with Sanoja telling reporters, "It’s truly disappointing" to see the game affected by such a situation. The missed call occurred with the Marlins trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning. The Marlins would go on to leave the tying run on base in the ninth inning.

The loss is a significant blow to the Marlins' postseason aspirations. The team now sits 3.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot, with the Phillies also ahead of them in the standings with a 68-58 record.

Marlins pitcher Cade Gibson is scheduled to face Phillies ace Zack Wheeler on Tuesday in another key matchup between the division rivals.
