UMass secured a 37-21 victory over Rutgers on Thursday night, ending a 16-game losing streak. However, the celebration was marred when UMass player Jahmad Harmon collided with a spectator.
In the fourth quarter, Harmon intercepted a pass from Rutgers quarterback Dylan Lonergan. In his excitement, Harmon ran toward the sideline and accidentally bumped into a woman with his shoulder. The impact caused the woman to fall backward, appearing to hit the back of her head on the turf. Harmon and his teammates continued their on-field celebrations without appearing to acknowledge the fallen spectator.
The win marked UMass's first victory against an FBS opponent since 2023 and their first halftime lead against a power conference school since 2017. Quarterback Pop Watson III threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Elijah Faulkner twice and Joseph Griffin Jr. once. Curtis Kimmons IV added a late touchdown run.
Rutgers' quarterback Lonergan passed for 242 yards and two touchdowns but also threw four interceptions and lost a fumble. The team's defense continued struggles from the previous season, allowing at least 30 points in eight of their 12 games.
