Tyler Nickel experienced a surreal moment Wednesday night as his name was called in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, with the New York Knicks selecting him with the 47th overall pick. The draft party, held at O’Neil’s Grill in Harrisonburg, Virginia, erupted with cheers as Nickel was embraced by his family and girlfriend, Zoli Khalil.
"Surreal…especially from this area, it just doesn’t happen," Nickel told reporters after the announcement, reflecting on the rarity of a local player reaching the NBA. "I feel crazy right now, just working my whole life to be in this position and obviously ultimately being drafted, it’s a dream. I feel like I’m in a dream right now."
Nickel's journey to the NBA included a decorated high school career at East Rockingham High School, where he became the Virginia High School League's all-time leading scorer with 2,909 points. He then moved on to college, beginning his collegiate career at North Carolina before transferring to Virginia Tech and later Vanderbilt.
At Vanderbilt, Nickel blossomed into a key player, starting every possible game in his two years with the team. He developed into a potent 3-point threat, helping guide the Commodores to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. His girlfriend, Zoli Khalil, who plays basketball for Towson, was present to celebrate the significant milestone with him.
While Nickel is considered a long shot to make the Knicks' active roster as a rookie and may begin his professional career in the G League, he has earned his opportunity. The Knicks, with potential roster changes and a need for shooting, could provide an opening for the newly drafted player to make an impact.
