NFL star Trent McDuffie has shared the unexpected and "brutal" manner in which he discovered his trade from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams, an event that initially left him feeling angry.
McDuffie, 25, was with the Chiefs, who drafted him in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, for four seasons, winning two Super Bowls under coach Andy Reid. He had established himself as a top defensive player and anticipated a contract extension with the team.
However, the trade came as a surprise. While training earlier this year, McDuffie began receiving notifications on his Apple Watch. He initially dismissed them, setting his watch to "do not disturb" to continue his workout. Soon after, his mother and fiancée entered the room, prompting McDuffie to ask why they were there. He learned the news of his impending move to Los Angeles had already leaked, before his agent had informed him.
"The world stopped for a second," McDuffie said, recalling the moment on the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast. "I was like: 'Let me get my bearings. What just happened?'"
He expressed initial frustration with how the situation was handled by the Chiefs. "A little part of me was just like: 'Damn, bro, what's up with that?'" he said. "'You didn’t let me know anything.' I didn’t have any conversation about nothing. It was just like: 'Bye' pretty much."
McDuffie's perspective shifted upon realizing he was headed to Los Angeles, a move that resonated with him as he grew up nearby. "Oh, I made it,” he thought. “I can’t hold on to the past... it happened. Let’s just move on as fast as I can."
He described the Rams organization as "so fun" and noted the team's "attention to wanting to get better." The cornerback added, "I feel like I got that spirit back, that swagger back. I’m in LA, I’m with guys who make this fun. I can’t wait for the season."
The Chiefs reportedly received four draft picks in the trade. McDuffie subsequently signed a four-year, $124 million deal with the Rams.
