Professional surfer Victor Bernardo and his wife, Johnni Bufkin Bernardo, are in intensive care following a severe car accident in Southern California on August 16. The couple sustained serious injuries in the wreck, which a friend described as having "easily could have been fatal."
Surfing filmmaker Logan Dulien shared details of the incident, stating that Victor Bernardo was airlifted to a hospital while his wife was transported by ambulance. Both are currently receiving care in the hospital. Organizers of a fundraiser established to support the couple indicated that Victor is preparing for surgery, and efforts are underway to improve Johnni's condition.
The accident left their vehicle significantly damaged, with images showing the mangled remains of the car. Specific details regarding the location and circumstances of the crash have not been publicly disclosed.
Road to Recovery
The couple is expected to face a lengthy and costly recovery period, with organizers of the GoFundMe campaign stating they anticipate both will be unable to work for at least six months to a year. They are projected to undergo additional surgeries, extensive rehabilitation, and require ongoing medication.
The GoFundMe aims to cover medical expenses, as well as everyday living costs such as rent, car payments, food, and pet care during their inability to work. As of the latest update, over $77,000 of a $500,000 target had been raised, including a $10,000 donation from an anonymous contributor.
A statement from the fundraiser expressed gratitude for the couple's survival and highlighted the support from their family, friends, and the wider surf community. "We hope to remove as much of the financial burden as possible as they navigate this life-changing journey to recovery," the statement read.
Bernardo, known for his skills as a freesurfer outside traditional competitive circuits, was scheduled to compete in the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy next month. He had expressed excitement about the event, particularly about bringing his mother on her first international trip.
