Tommy Fleetwood, affectionately known as “Tommy Lad” by local fans, is in contention to win the British Open in his hometown of Southport, England. Fleetwood is 4-under par, trailing the leaders by four shots after a second-round 67 at Royal Birkdale.

"I’ve put myself where I’m four shots off the lead,’’ Fleetwood said. “So it’s like if I play well, I know I’m sort of going to be closing in, if you like.’’ He described the support from the crowds as “unbelievable,” adding that they have been “an absolute pleasure to play in front of for these two days.” Fleetwood stated that the fans make a significant difference to his game and that he intends to savor the unique experience of playing in a major at his home club.

Several notable players missed the cut for the weekend. Jordan Spieth, the 2017 champion, finished 10-over par after a difficult second round, including a 9 on the 17th hole. Justin Rose, a past contender at Royal Birkdale, missed the cut by one shot at 3-over par.

Rory McIlroy has twice driven the green on the 414-yard, par-4 ninth hole, achieving a two-putt birdie on both occasions. He explained that this strategy was not part of his initial game plan but emerged due to favorable wind conditions.

Eric Cole significantly improved his standing after a first-round 6-over 76. Cole shot a 6-under 64 in the second round, placing him near contention for the weekend.

James Nicholas, a Korn Ferry Tour player competing in his first British Open, withdrew from the tournament due to bone bruises on both feet. Nicholas sustained the injury recently when he had to jump over a fence to reach his car at a tournament in Spain. He was using crutches after the first round.

Jackson Suber, who surprised many by leading after the first round with a 65, maintained his position, shooting a 1-under 69 on Friday. Suber is two shots off the lead entering the weekend. He previously stated he had never been to Europe or played on a links course before the current tournament week.
