Former U.S. alpine skier TJ Lanning died on July 2 in Park City, Utah, at the age of 41. A cause of death has not yet been announced. Lanning is survived by his two children and parents.
Lindsey Vonn, a close friend and former competitor, led tributes to Lanning, sharing an emotional message on Instagram. "TJ (aka crowbar jr) - we've known each other since we were 12," Vonn wrote. "We shared a lot of memories on the mountain. I hope you are at peace my friend. We will all miss you. Until we meet again."
Lanning's skiing career was marked by promise and perseverance, but it was cut short by a severe injury in 2009. While competing in Lake Louise, Canada, he crashed after losing control, resulting in a fractured neck and a major knee injury. This incident ultimately led to his retirement from competitive skiing.
Following his career as a skier, Lanning transitioned into coaching, dedicating over two decades to the U.S. Ski Team. He served as a coach, sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation of athletes. His contributions to the sport extended beyond his years of competition, impacting countless lives.
Ski Racing Media noted Lanning's career was characterized by "promise, pain, persistence and impact." The outlet added that his death at a young age is a "profound loss for the American ski racing community." Lanning achieved three World Championship appearances and won the U.S. National Downhill title during his competitive years.
An obituary described Lanning as having a "larger-than-life personality, his loyalty, and his willingness to always speak his mind." It further stated, "He pushed his skiing to, and sometimes beyond, the thin red line, and he brought that same intensity to every part of his life, making his presence felt wherever he went."
Lanning will be remembered for his deep care for loved ones and his commitment to making life easier for those around him. His life serves as a reminder of the coexistence of strength and vulnerability, and the importance of deeply caring for one another.
