America’s chances of ending a 23-year wait for a men's Grand Slam title were diminished on Saturday following Taylor Fritz's five-set defeat to Francisco Cerundolo at the US Open. Fritz, the ninth seed, lost to the 24th seed Cerundolo of Argentina with a final score of 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Fritz had been considered a prominent contender, having reached the 2024 final and breaking a 15-year streak of American men failing to reach that stage. His loss in New York adds to the historical narrative of American men's Grand Slam struggles, a topic that former champion Andy Roddick has openly discussed.
"I'll be the first person to pop a beer with whoever does it, guaranteed," Roddick said previously, highlighting the prolonged drought.
Fritz's Disappointment
Fritz, who had advanced with a dominant straight-sets victory in his previous match, saw his serve broken for the first time in the tournament by Cerundolo. The momentum shifted in the third set, allowing the Argentine player to gain a foothold in the match. Errors began to creep into Fritz's game in the fourth set, and a crucial double fault in the fifth set proved decisive in Cerundolo's final service break.
Following the match, a visibly emotional Fritz expressed his frustration. "I mean, I don't even know what to say," he stated in the press room, his voice trembling. "I don't want to, like - I don't really want to talk to anybody, see anybody. I kind of just need to get out for a couple days, and then just get back to work. I don't know how I let that happen today."
Remaining American Contenders
Despite Fritz's exit, several other American players remain in contention for the title. Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and newcomer Alex Michelsen are through to the second week. Learner Tien and Michael Zheng are also competing later.
Tiafoe, a finalist at the Cincinnati Open two weeks prior, is set to face Daniil Medvedev. He has a strong record on the Louis Armstrong court, where he has not lost a match.
Shelton, 23, who won the Canadian Open Masters last month, faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. While Shelton's path to this stage has been challenging, Tsitsipas has not advanced past this round at the US Open previously.
Paul, who has reached Grand Slam quarter-finals on all three surfaces, has a difficult matchup against Carlos Alcaraz. Paul lost to Alcaraz earlier this year at the Australian Open, but the Spaniard is reportedly not in his top form. This match presents a significant opportunity for Paul, playing in front of a home crowd.
Players have generally downplayed expectations regarding the end of the American men's Grand Slam drought. Shelton acknowledged the question is frequently raised but stated his focus is on his own performance. The era dominated by players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, and now challenged by Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz, has made achieving a Grand Slam title particularly difficult for American players.
