Sydney Swans midfielder James Rowbottom has stated that the futures of his five suspended teammates are a matter "above my pay grade," while revealing he is supporting housemate Nick Blakey through the ongoing club crisis.
Five Swans players, including Blakey, Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon, and Riley Bice, were suspended for the remainder of the season after breaching the club's behavioral standards during a late-night gathering at Melbourne's Pullman Hotel in August. The sanctions rule them out of the team's finals campaign.
Rowbottom, when asked if the suspended players should return to the club, responded, "It's a lot more complex than what I think or believe." He added, "The club is working through that with them and the relevant party. Honestly, it's above my pay grade."
Blakey, 26, is reportedly considering requesting a trade during the October exchange period due to a deterioration in his relationship with the Sydney Swans. Sources claim Blakey is angered by the club's handling of the fallout, and both the player and the club have grown increasingly frustrated with each other. Blakey remains contracted until the end of 2031.
The club sanctions are separate from a Victoria Police investigation into allegations of sexual assault within a hotel room. Blakey, Heeney, Warner, and Jordon were formally interviewed by detectives this week. Riley Bice has reportedly been cleared of criminal wrongdoing and is being treated as a possible witness. No charges have been laid against any of the players.
Rowbottom acknowledged the challenging period for his housemate. "It's been a challenging period for him, and I'm just reaching out as a friend," he said. "Living with him is another layer to the situation, and so I've reached out as a friend, but no, we haven't spoken about any of those sort of specifics. You've got to sort of separate the person from the problem when you live with someone to try and offer support. I've been trying to do that."
Blakey had previously explored a potential move to Gold Coast in 2025, with his partner, Olympic sprinter Ella Connolly, planning to relocate to Queensland in preparation for the Brisbane 2032 Games. Interest from other clubs is expected to be strong should Sydney agree to consider a trade. AFL reporter Jay Clark has suggested up to eight Victorian clubs, including St Kilda, North Melbourne, Melbourne, Collingwood, and Carlton, could pursue Blakey.
Blakey possesses a strong family connection to North Melbourne through his father, John, who played 359 matches for Fitzroy and the Kangaroos. Blakey played 22 matches this season, averaging 25.6 disposals, and established himself as a key counterattacking defender. His suspension also made him ineligible for All-Australian selection.
The suspended players will not be present at the SCG for Sydney's qualifying final against Brisbane. The club continues to assess the positions of all five suspended players beyond the current season.
