The New South Wales Blues secured the State of Origin shield on Wednesday, achieving a decisive victory at Suncorp Stadium, a venue where they had not won in 19 years. The team's triumph came after a significant loss in Origin II, which had left their chances of winning the series appearing slim.
The Blues' performance was characterized by a dominant effort across all facets of the game from the outset. Their mental fortitude was bolstered by an inspirational address from Stuart Diver, a survivor of the 1997 Thredbo landslide.
Diver, then a 27-year-old ski instructor, was trapped for 65 hours beneath 3,500 tons of rubble following the disaster that killed 18 others, including his wife. His rescue was widely described as a miracle.
Recognizing the team's need for resilience after their previous series loss, coach Laurie Daley invited Diver to speak with the New South Wales team at the start of their camp for Origin I. Diver, a friend of NSW assistant coach Matt King, shared his firsthand experience of overcoming extreme adversity.
"Everyone can have the skill, everyone can train, and everyone can do all of that sort of stuff and they're all elite athletes," Diver told AAP. "But it's just, how do you get that next little bit out of what they do? We tried to set that tone of believing you can get through anything. You end up with results like this."
Diver's message resonated with the players, particularly in their approach to high-pressure situations. "He just spoke about the things that go through your mind in that situation. It's inspiring. He's a special bloke," Daley commented to AAP. "He addressed a lot of the things that we spoke about as a team, what you need to do under pressure, maximum pressure."
Diver rejoined the Blues on game day for Origin III, spending time with Daley before the match and participating in the post-game celebrations. The Blues ultimately won the decider 30-12 at Suncorp Stadium.
"It's just awesome to be here and learn about what Laurie does and what all of the coaching team does," Diver said. "It's pretty special to be part of that for me and to be in the rooms prior to the match is something that I won't forget. To win in Queensland like that is pretty amazing."
