Soccer has been rocked by the sudden death of Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder who represented South Africa in the recent World Cup. Adams featured twice for his country in the tournament before their elimination by Canada in the last 32 on June 28. The circumstances of his death are not yet confirmed, but he is believed to have been found in a hotel in Cape Town.

Less than 24 hours before his death was reported, Adams had shared a photo of himself and his girlfriend, Aqueelah Adendorf, on Instagram. Following the news, Adendorf expressed gratitude for the condolences and support she and their five-year-old daughter, Allaia, have received.

Her emotional message to Adams prior to the World Cup has since resurfaced. In the May 27 Instagram post, Adendorf wrote about her "pride" in his World Cup selection, calling him "inspiring" and highlighting his hard work, sacrifices, and perseverance.

"Watching you achieve something this big has filled my heart with so much pride," Adendorf wrote. "From the hard work, sacrifices, early mornings, disappointments, and moments nobody saw — you kept going, stayed disciplined, and trusted God through it all. And now look at you… representing your country on the national team."

She added, "I don’t think you even realize how inspiring you are. You deserve every single moment of this because I’ve seen how much you’ve worked for it. Through every challenge, you never gave up on your dream, and that alone makes me so proud to stand beside you and support you through it all."

Adendorf concluded her message with, "No matter how far this journey takes you, just know I’ll always be your biggest supporter, loudest cheerleader, and safest place. This is only the beginning for you, my love. May God continue to guide your steps, protect you, and open even bigger doors for your future. Keep shining, keep believing, and keep making us proud. Your hard work is finally paying off and I know there’s still so much more greatness waiting for you."

Adams had faced personal loss in the lead-up to the tournament. He was mourning the death of his grandmother, Marianna Adams, who passed away two weeks before the World Cup and was buried on June 27 while he was on international duty in the United States. He was also still grieving the loss of his close friend, South African youth footballer Oshwin Andries, who died in February 2023.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) issued a statement mourning Adams' passing. "The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams," the union stated. "Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large."

Adams began his club career at Stellenbosch before transferring to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. He played for an hour in South Africa's 2-0 defeat against Mexico and the first 45 minutes of their 1-1 draw with Czechia during the World Cup. He was recognized for his energy, creativity, and composure in midfield during his rise in South African football.
