The WNBA subreddit has banned the name of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, preventing users from posting about her on the league's official Reddit forum. The filter includes "Cunningham," "Sophie," "sc," "scunningham," "soph," and "sophiacunningham."
Moderators of the subreddit stated that the filtering of content related to Cunningham is a measure to combat trolls and individuals who are not genuine fans of the WNBA. One user shared a private conversation with a moderator who indicated that continued discussion about Cunningham on the forum could lead to a ban.
"We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W," the moderator reportedly told the user. "We have chosen to filter content. If you want to post freely about Sophie you can go to a different sub. You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned."
Cunningham recently became a focal point in discussions surrounding transgender athletes in women's sports. In late July, she expressed to ESPN that she believes women in sports should not have to compete against biological men. She clarified that her statements were not an expression of hate towards transgender individuals but rather a desire to "extend love" while also being "honest" and protecting young girls in sports.
Her comments sparked a wider debate, drawing reactions from public figures like former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White. Kanter notably declared his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, claiming eligibility.
The WNBA has acknowledged the ongoing discussion, with reports indicating that the league has convened meetings to discuss the topic, player safety, and online discourse. However, a task force reportedly could not reach a consensus on a precise definition of "woman" to inform updated eligibility rules.
The WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article XIII, Section 1(a), states that "Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA."
The Reddit subreddit's decision to filter Cunningham's name appears to be a direct consequence of her prominent role in this polarizing conversation.
