Heartbroken Socceroos players have begun returning to Australia after the national team's elimination from the FIFA World Cup in a penalty shootout against Egypt. Among those arriving at Melbourne airport were Patrick Beach, Mohamed Toure, and Connor Metcalfe.
Australia reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the second consecutive time but saw their campaign end in the Round of 32. The team's exit now shifts the focus to the futures of several standout players who garnered significant attention during the tournament.
Players like Lucas Herrington, Alessandro Circati, Nestory Irankunda, and Jordan Bos were already subjects of transfer speculation before the World Cup began. Herrington, an 18-year-old defender for the Colorado Rapids, had reportedly attracted interest from Barcelona, while Parma's Circati was being monitored by clubs in Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga.
Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who had a breakout tournament, is also expected to attract considerable interest from clubs abroad. Feyenoord defender Bos, whose future has long been linked with a move to the Premier League or Bundesliga, is awaiting the results of scans on a left knee injury sustained during the match against Egypt.
Circati acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his club future, stating, "With the World Cup being over now, you've gotta start putting things on the table, seeing what will happen." He added that he hasn't been in contact with any clubs and will leave discussions to his agent, emphasizing the need to refresh after a long season and tournament. "And all those talks - whether they're true or false - they'll all unravel themselves slowly."
Herrington expressed a desire to take a break before making any career decisions. "It's hard to process anything now so I'll just take my mind off the game for a few weeks and just try and recover the best I can and just get back to the MLS season with Colorado," he said, indicating his immediate focus remains with the Rapids.
Melbourne City goalkeeper Beach also plans to decompress before assessing his options. "I'm gonna take a few days now to understand all that's happened," Beach stated. "There's interest out there of course but for me I'm just focused on getting back to Australia and having a little bit of time off and then I'll know more." He confirmed that interest exists, as is common for players performing at a World Cup, but kept specifics private.
Experienced defender Harry Souttar, who had a strong World Cup performance after injury struggles and limited game time at Leicester City, also plans to take a break and re-evaluate his future. "Obviously I've still got two years left on a contract there, so yeah, I'll certainly be going back," Souttar said regarding his club. "And we'll see what happens in the future, but I'm certainly not looking too far ahead."
