Socceroos player Cristian Volpato has allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test for cocaine and is accused of being caught speeding twice on Sydney's Anzac Bridge within a two-hour period.
Volpato, 22, who gained prominence during the Socceroos' recent World Cup campaign, was first stopped by police on Thursday around 11:05 p.m. Officers allege he was driving his BMW Coupe at least 25 km/h over the 60 km/h speed limit. He provided a negative breath test and received an infringement notice for allegedly exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h.
Approximately two hours later, police reportedly stopped Volpato again. This time, officers allege he was traveling at 109 km/h in the same 60 km/h zone. During this second stop, police administered a roadside drug test, which they allege yielded a positive result for cocaine.
As a result of the second incident, Volpato has been issued another infringement notice for allegedly exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h. His international driver's license has also been suspended for six months.
A statement from NSW Police indicated that Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers are committed to targeting dangerous driving behaviors, including excessive speeding, to ensure road safety. The statement also reminded drivers of the potential consequences of speeding and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
