American cyclist Sepp Kuss had a dangerous encounter during Stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday, narrowly avoiding a fall down a cliffside after crashing into a catch fence. The incident occurred on a mountainous section of the course, where riders navigated roads with significant drop-offs.
Kuss was leading the stage when he rounded a sweeping corner and appeared to understeer, colliding with a low concrete barrier just as the catch fence ended. The barrier and fence prevented him from going over the edge.
This was Kuss's second crash of the day. The earlier incident also impacted his performance, and the second crash resulted in him losing the lead. He ultimately finished the stage in third place. Had he won the stage, it would have marked the first stage win for an American since Kuss himself achieved one in 2021.
