Sebastien Pocognoli has been confirmed as the new head coach of Scotland's national football team, signing an initial two-year contract to succeed Steve Clarke.

Pocognoli, 39, becomes Scotland's second foreign manager, following in the footsteps of German Berti Vogts, who managed the team from 2002 to 2004. The former Union Saint-Gilloise and Monaco head coach led Union to the Belgian title in the 2024-25 season.

Describing his appointment as an honor, Pocognoli expressed excitement about the opportunity, citing the famous passion of Scotland's supporters, which he experienced firsthand as a player for Belgium in 2013. "Along with my coaching staff, I will do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of and build on the success that has been achieved already by my predecessor," he stated on the Scottish Football Association website.

The former West Brom and Brighton left-back aims to build on Steve Clarke's record of leading Scotland to their first three major tournaments of the 21st century. Pocognoli indicated that he has conducted extensive research and discussions to identify areas for improvement.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell called Pocognoli the "standout candidate" after a thorough selection process, highlighting his impressive individual qualities, desire for the role, and clear vision. The appointment was also a significant moment for newly appointed SFA chief football officer Craig Mulholland, who was heavily involved in the process.

Mulholland described Pocognoli as "one of Europe's brightest and most sought-after coaches," adding that he will bring an "aggressive, front-foot style of play that will excite supporters." He also noted that Pocognoli's personality and character would enable him to connect with the players.

Pocognoli's managerial career includes leading Union Saint-Gilloise to their first-ever league title before moving to Monaco. At Monaco, he guided the team to the Champions League knockout phase but was later sacked following a seventh-placed finish in Ligue 1.

He is set to begin his tenure with a Nations League campaign against Slovenia, North Macedonia, and Switzerland. Pocognoli's first match in charge will be in Ljubljana on September 26.
