Opening bids for the Seattle Seahawks were due Monday, marking a significant development in the potential $7 billion sale of the Super Bowl champion franchise. This transaction is anticipated to become the largest in NFL history, surpassing the $6.05 billion sale of the Washington Commanders in 2023.
Several potential ownership groups have reportedly emerged. According to Bloomberg, one group is led by Aditya Mittal, CEO of the steel firm ArcelorMittal, and includes former Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck. Another offer is believed to come from billionaire Vinod Khosla, who currently holds a minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers. Billionaire financier Todd Boehly, known for his stakes in the Los Angeles Lakers and Chelsea FC, is also reportedly heading a separate bid.
The Seahawks have been owned by the Allen family since 1997, when Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen acquired the team for $194 million. Following Allen's death in 2018, his sister Jody Allen assumed responsibility for his sports holdings, including the Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers. Allen's will stipulated that his sports assets be eventually sold, with proceeds directed to philanthropy. The Portland Trail Blazers were sold in September for approximately $4 billion to an investment group led by Tom Dundon.
The NFL franchise was officially put up for sale shortly after its victory in Super Bowl LX. At the time of the sale announcement, the team was valued at nearly $7 billion. The sale of the Seahawks is expected to set a new benchmark for sports team valuations, potentially exceeding the $10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers, which became the most expensive U.S. sports team sale in history in June 2026.
