The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams have earned the top two spots in Colin Cowherd's initial "Herd Hierarchy" for the 2026 NFL season, released Tuesday on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd." The Cincinnati Bengals also cracked the top 10.
Just one of last season's Super Bowl participants secured a place in Cowherd's top 10 list heading into Week 1. Notably absent from the rankings were the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens, though Cowherd indicated they were close to making the cut.
Week 1 NFL Hierarchy
Cowherd ranked the Seahawks No. 1, citing that many of their key players are either entering or in their prime athletic years, with a perceived lack of egos and a strong coaching staff under Mike Macdonald. He highlighted players like Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon.
The Rams landed at No. 2, with Cowherd calling them the most talented team in football. However, he expressed concerns about them being a target every week, potential motivation issues as heavy favorites, and some age among key players like Matthew Stafford.
At No. 3, Cowherd placed the Buffalo Bills, noting Josh Allen's strong divisional record and the addition of D.J. Moore as a No. 1 receiver. He acknowledged the team's past struggles with run defense but pointed to their increased draft capital allocation on defense in recent years.
The Detroit Lions secured the No. 4 spot, with Cowherd expecting them to contend for the Super Bowl. He pointed to an easy schedule, an improved offensive coordinator, and electric playmakers like Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta.
Cowherd ranked the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 5, praising their offensive line and quarterback play. He addressed the departure of A.J. Brown but noted the additions of Dontayvion Wicks and Hollywood Brown as sufficient receiving support.
For the No. 6 position, Cowherd selected the Los Angeles Chargers. He cited their 11-6 record last season, an upgrade in offensive coordinator with Mike McDaniel, and a strong overall roster.
The Chicago Bears were placed at No. 7. Cowherd expressed optimism about quarterback Caleb Williams' low turnover rate and the potential of a young receiving trio including Rome Odunze. He did, however, voice concerns about a consistent pass rush.
At No. 8, Cowherd ranked the Denver Broncos. He pointed to their strong defense, the return of key starters, and the leadership of head coach DeMeco Ryans. He also praised the tandem of edge rushers Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr., and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., but noted concerns about receiver health.
The Miami Dolphins landed at No. 9. Cowherd noted their ability to protect the quarterback and their consistent ability to generate sacks. He also believes quarterback Bo Nix is "pretty good."
Rounding out the top 10 at No. 10 were the Cincinnati Bengals. Cowherd highlighted their divisional success when Joe Burrow has a strong defense and noted their offseason additions on the defensive side of the ball, including Dexter Lawrence, Jonathan Allen, Kyle Dugger, Cashius Howell, and Boye Mafe.
