Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland will compete in a sudden-death playoff on Monday morning at the Travelers Championship after finishing regulation tied at 21-under par. Weather and darkness halted play Sunday evening at TPC River Highlands, setting up the rare Monday conclusion.
The playoff is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET on the 18th hole. The format is sudden death, where the first player to win a hole is declared the champion.
Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, entered the Travelers Championship with one PGA Tour victory in 2026, a win at The American Express in January. Despite this relative drought by his standards, he has maintained a high level of performance, recording eight top-five finishes in his first 13 starts of the season. These include runner-up finishes at the Masters, RBC Heritage, and Cadillac Championship, as well as a third-place finish at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and a tie for fourth at last week's U.S. Open.
During Sunday's final round, Scheffler began one shot behind Hovland. After a tense back-and-forth, Hovland made birdies on holes 14 and 15 to pull into a share of the lead. Scheffler had a chance to take the outright lead on the 17th, but his birdie putt lipped out. Both players reached the 18th tee tied. Hovland's 25-foot birdie putt narrowly missed, leaving Scheffler with an 8 1/2-foot putt for par to force a playoff. Scheffler converted the putt, leading to the Monday showdown.
This marks the PGA Tour's first Monday playoff since Rory McIlroy defeated J.J. Spaun in a playoff at the 2025 Players Championship. Scheffler has previous playoff experience at TPC River Highlands, having defeated Tom Kim in a one-hole playoff in 2024 for his first Travelers Championship title. He has a strong track record at the course, with finishes including 13th in 2022, fourth in 2023, sixth last year, and now another chance to win in 2026.
Despite his consistent high finishes, the winless streak since January has led to questions, though the narrative suggests that his current performance level would be a career-best stretch for most other golfers. Regardless of the outcome on Monday, the notes indicate that there is "nothing wrong with Scottie Scheffler."
