San Francisco is solidifying its position as a major hub for professional sports, recently securing hosting rights for both Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2028 All-Star Game and the Women's National Basketball Association's (WNBA) 2027 All-Star festivities. These announcements add to a growing list of high-profile sporting events scheduled to take place in the Bay Area.
The MLB All-Star Game will be held at Oracle Park in 2028, marking the Giants' home ballpark's second time hosting the event since 2007. The WNBA All-Star Game and its associated events will convene at the Chase Center in 2027, located near the city's waterfront.
These recent selections follow a period of significant sporting events hosted in the region. Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara made history by hosting both the Super Bowl and World Cup matches within the same calendar year. The city also hosted NBA All-Star weekend in February 2025, with the Chase Center serving as the venue.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie highlighted the city's commitment to hosting major events, stating, "We're a city on the rise. And the confidence of the WNBA and their commissioner allowing us to host their marquee event is something that we're going to be ready for." He also noted that public safety has been a top priority, aiming to ensure safe and clean streets for residents and visitors.
The influx of major sporting events is seen as a key component of the city's revitalization following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. "These major events bring visitors, support our local restaurants and bars, and continue to drive our recovery," Lurie said. "And we're going to keep our foot on the accelerator, so every family feels the benefit of that comeback."
The Bay Area's schedule of significant sporting events includes:
- NBA All-Star weekend (Chase Center, Feb. 2025)
- NCAA men’s basketball regional final (Chase Center, March 2025)
- Laver Cup tennis tournament (Chase Center, Sept. 2025)
- Super Bowl 60 (Levi’s Stadium, Feb. 2026)
- NFL Pro Bowl (Moscone Center, Feb. 2026)
- World Cup soccer qualifying and Round of 32 matches (Levi’s Stadium, June 2026)
- WNBA All-Star weekend (Chase Center, July 2027)
- SailGP international sailing competition (San Francisco Bay, April 2028)
- PGA Tour golf championship (Olympic Club, May 2028)

The Bay Area Host Committee, formed in 2022 and led by CEO Zaileen Janmohamed, has played a crucial role in securing these events. The committee's efforts were instrumental in convincing NFL owners to award the Super Bowl and World Cup matches to the region, despite the tight timeframe between the two events.
