Global soccer star Sam Kerr has signed a contract with Gotham FC that will keep her with the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) club through 2030. Kerr, 32, expressed that the NWSL was the only league she envisioned herself playing in after her departure from Chelsea this summer.
Kerr, who previously played for Gotham FC in its earlier iteration as Sky Blue FC, left the U.S. in 2019 with two MVP awards and the league's all-time scoring record. She went on to achieve global stardom with Chelsea and the Australian national team. "I always had a desire to come back to the NWSL," Kerr stated on Thursday. She noted that multiple NWSL clubs pursued her, but the decision ultimately came down to "the little things that were important to me."
Gotham FC's ambitions were a significant draw for Kerr, who described the club as similar to Chelsea in its desire to win trophies. "Gotham is probably the most similar club to Chelsea in their desires and what they want from a season," Kerr said. The club has won the NWSL Championship in 2023 and 2025 and the inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup.
The roster also played a role in her decision. "It helps that they have some of the best players in the league," Kerr commented, specifically mentioning midfielder Rose Lavelle as a player she was eager to play with. Gotham FC's president of soccer operations, Yael Averbuch West, confirmed discussions have taken place regarding how Kerr will integrate with current striker Esther González.
Kerr also cited positive feedback about coach Juan Carlos Amorós. "When I spoke to him, he impressed me tactically," she said. "When you play in a team that creates a lot of goal-scoring opportunities, as a nine [striker], that’s the No. 1 thing that you want."
Averbuch West was instrumental in the recruitment process, engaging in months of conversations with Kerr and her agent. The personal connection to Gotham FC was also a factor, as Kerr's wife, former USWNT midfielder Kristie Mewis, played for the club for two seasons before leaving in 2023. "It is important that Kristie played here and knows us and had a really good experience," Averbuch West said.
Financial considerations were also part of the deal. Gotham FC recently increased its allocation money, which can be used for salaries above the NWSL cap, by trading defender Lilly Reale to the expansion Boston team. "It’s about making an offer that shows respect to the player and also getting creative about what we do," Averbuch West explained.
Finally, Kerr acknowledged the appeal of the location, referring to the chance to "live in the best city in the world."
Kerr is eligible to debut for Gotham FC in their July 15 match at Citi Field.
